GUWAHATI, Feb 17 – At a time when deliberations are going on on the future prospect of Assamese language, having some proficiency in Assamese could well land you on a plum job in the US administration.
In a welcome development that can give a new impetus to the language in the international arena, Assamese has found a place on application forms for selection to political positions in the US Government. The application forms are meant for filling up thousands of government posts. Assamese is among the 21 Indian languages finding a mention in the application forms brought out by the Barack Obama administration, which have a total of 101 languages from across the world listed in the forms’ ‘international experience’ section. The applicants are asked to select the languages known to them.
Reacting to the developments, Asam Sahitya Sabha general secretary Dr Pradip Bhuyan termed it as “something positive’’, and said that it would serve the long-term promotional needs of the Assamese language. “This is good news for Assam and the entire Northeast. It would help the cause of the Assamese language and literature by way of promotion and expansion in the global arena,” Dr Bhuyan said.
Assamese, incidentally, is ranked 46th among all the languages of the world in terms of number of speakers.
The Indian languages that get a place in the US Government’s application forms include several languages that are yet to make it to the directory in the Indian Constitution. Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Chhattisgarhi, Haryanvi, Magadhi and Marwari, which have not been enlisted in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, are in the US application forms.
Assamese apart, the other Indian languages listed in the US application forms are Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Maithili, Malayalam, Nepali, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. source: assam tribune
