Madhabdev remembered

JORHAT, Sept 10: Despite the hot and humid weather, devotees thronged the Dhekiakhowa Naamghar in Jorhat and the xatras in Majuli on the occasion of Madhabdev Tithi yesterday.
The xatras in Majuli sang special hymns (naam) in praise of the 15-16th century neo-vaishnavaite saint and the most famous disciple of Srimanta Shankardev.

Born in 1489 at Leteku Pukhuri at Narayanpur in North Lakhimpur, Madhabdev was a worshipper of Shakti (female energy). In 1522, he met Srimanta Shankardev at Majuli and converted himself to Vaishnavism. This famous meeting, where a hot debate had ensued between followers of two different religious ideologies and the acceptance of the superiority of Shankardev by Madhabdev is know as Mani Kanchan Sanjog.

The Dhekiakhowa Naamghar is also associated with Madhavdev, as it was here that he had rested and partaken dhekia (a local edible fern) and rice in the house of a poor old couple, when he was thrown out of the Ahom kingdom. The naamghar was established at that very site and hence got its name. A lamp lit by Madhabdev, which is believed to have never extinguished, is still lit in the sanctum sanatorium of the naamghar.
People braved the sweltering heat to partcipate in the naam at the Dhekiakhowa naamghar and special arrangements were made for the visitors. THE SENTINEL
