Memorandum to PM to protect Majuli

JORHAT, Sept 8: The Majuli Suraksha Sammanay Manch submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh through Jorhat MP Bijoy Krishna Handique, seeking Central Government’s intervention in protecting the largest river island in the world, Majuli and apprising him of the shoddy work done by the Brahmaputra Board, which has been entrusted to carry erosion protection work on the island.

The members of the Manch led by its president Umakanta Rajkhowa and general secretary Debojit Bora met the MP at Jorhat last evening and handed over the memorandum to him.
Handique assured the members that he would soon visit Majuli and take stock of the situation and the works undertaken by the Brahmaputra Board so far.

The members further sought Handique’s help in fixing a meeting with the Prime Minister in Delhi, so that they could personally apprise him of the problems in Majuli, which is seeking a place in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list due to its history and unique xatriya culture.

Meanwhile, in a meeting held few days back, the Majuli Suraksha Sammanay Manch had decided that representatives from 23 organizations led by the xatradhikars (monastic heads) would meet the Prime Minister after the asomiya month of bhaadon (bhaadra in Sanskrit) of the Saka calendar.

The bhaadon month which began on August 17 is of importance for the neo-vaishnavites residing on the island as lord Krishna as well as Srimanta Sankardeva’s birthday falls in this month. THE SENTINEL
