A dead man is suddenly alive and kicking. He is Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, the Al-Qaida’s military commander in Afghanistan declared dead by the Pakistan Army last year in a US drone strike. In a 20-minute video in Arabic received by the BBC the other day, he has threatened India of more Mumbai-like terror if it attacks Pakistan. Mustafa says that ‘‘India should know it well that it will have to pay a heavy price if it attacks Pakistan’’. This threat goes beyond what and how Mustafa has worded it. There is a mindset at work: the jihadi in Mustafa, or the pan-Islamist in his savage avatar, is identifying with the Islamic state of Pakistan — and of course with its real establishment, the military or the ISI. What is interesting is that Pakistan, as ally of the US in its war on terror, should talk of eliminating the likes of Mustafa and the jihadi species should appear from their ‘grave’ to say that as long as they are around, Pakistan will be protected from India! That also sums up the Pakistani establishment’s continued shenanigans and the patronage that the so-called non-state actors enjoy in that country. Mustafa has also asked the people of Pakistan to rise up and overthrow their civilian government. But he is not saying he will come to their aid only after the overthrow of the government. Which means, Zardari or no Zardari, in the event of a war with India, the people of Pakistan can rest assured that jihadis will be on their side fighting alongside the Pakistan Army. Are they happy about it?
