Bishnupur Congress leader shot at

IMPHAL, Mar 12 – Suspected militants shot at the president of the district committee of the Congress party this morning.

The injured president of Bishnupur district committee Y Maipak has been shifted to RIMS hospital near here for treatment as he is critically wounded, hospital sources added.

Sources available here said, out of three bullets, one bullet is still stuck in his right chest, reports said.

Meanwhile,Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee in a release here strongly condemned the attack.The party also appealed the ultras not to target their leaders in future.

The sixty-year-old district committee president was shot at by two armed persons in the early morning, sources added.

Narrating the incident, Pisakmacha, wife of the victim told the media that around 1 am today, two youths came and asked for the residence of the Councilor of the district. “When we are trying to help the youths, they asked me to give them a blanket and towel and when I went inside to take it they took my husband. Later we heard guns shot and when we rushed out, we found him with bullet injuries”.

No underground outfit operating in the State claimed responsibility for the attack till the filing of this report. Besides, the State police is yet to ascertain the attackers.

Earlier, Manipur based outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (MC) had warned to target the Congress leaders and their offices in the State. Declaring to launch its ‘Operation Red Fox’ over the Congress Government and Congress officials,the outfit’s Military Affairs Secretary Lanheiba Meitei had once accused Chief Minister O Ibobi of paying no heed to the outfit’s appeal to stop rampant killing of innocent civilians by security forces in alleged fake encounters. So far Congress offices at Thoubal Athokpam in Thoubal and Nambol in Bishnupur and Nongmeibung office in Imphal east district were attacked in February end this year. ASSAM TRIBUNE
