BJP finalises list of six LS candidates

NEW DELHI, March 13 – The BJP today managed to finalise the list of candidates for six seats in Assam, keeping Guwahati and Mangaldai seats pending. However, a formal announcement is expected tomorrow. The meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC), headed by national party president, Opposition Leader, LK Advani, joined Rajnath Singh besides other senior members.

Party sources said the meeting today finalised the list of candidates for six seats. Nowever, differences of opinion over candidates for Guwahati and Mangaldai seats remained. Sources said indications by Deka expressing his willingness to switch to Mangaldai seat complicated the selection process.

The Party had narrowed down the selection to Ashok Singal for the seat, surrendered by the sitting MP, Narayan Borkotoki.

Till the time of filing of this report, it was still tough fight for Bijoya Chakravarty, though she is reportedly ahead in the race for Guwahati seat, as she was backed by majority of the Central members.

Sources confided that CEC has zeroed down its list to K Daulagaphu (Diphu), Kamakhya Prasad Tassa (Jorhat), Nilomani Rai Pradhan (Dhubri), Rajen Gohain (Nagaon), Kabindra Purkayastha (Silchar) and Sudhansu Das (Karimganj).

Sources said that another round of meeting of the CEC expected later this evening is likely to finalise the candidates for the two seats.

The CEC meeting on Friday became controversial, as some of the members including Arun Jaitely failed to turn up. The differences were reportedly over appointment of Sudhansu Mittal as co-in charge for the North-east.

The businessman-turned politician, who played a key role in ensuring the seat-sharing pact between AGP and BJP, was given charge by the national president of the Party. The meeting ended up discussing the issue at length, sources said.

Meanwhile, Deka told newsmen at the BJP headquarters, after the meeting that they had given their view to the Central leaders regarding the candidates and the rest was up to them to finalise.

When asked where he was planning to contest from, he replied that the final decision was for the Central leadership to take.

Reacting to the Congress Party’s list of candidates, he alleged that the Congress Party was trying to bring division among the ethnic groups. “The Congress is trying to please the ethnic groups,” he said.

He said this in the context of the attacks on the ethnic groups in the State during the Congress rule. In the last election, the Congress tried to please a particular community, he added.
