Brahmaputra Board admits being unsuccessful

Dibrugarh, March 12: The Secretary of the Brahmaputra Board has now come on record in admitting that there is no instance of any scheme of the board being successful as far as the flood control and anti-erosion measures are concerned.

In a letter no. BB/5122/2005/Vol-11/48 dated February 12, 2009 in a reply made under the provision of RTI Act 2005, the secretary of the board GP Singh has informed the youth leader of Dibrugarh Subash Dutta, that in the history of the board no scheme is successful in its implementation.

In the reply, the Secretary has stated that Rs 7.44 crore and Rs 13.98 crore were earmarked for protection of Majuli in the years 2007-08 and 2008-09 respectively. In addition, another Rs 91.20 crore and Rs 10.47 crore in the last financial years allotted for other schemes. However, Subash Dutta alleged that because of the incompetence and corruption of the board, the problem relating to flood and erosion in the state are yet to be solved.

It is not that the Centre is not giving any money to the board. Though the same is not enough to tackle the problems of flood and erosion of the state, the fact that money allotted for anti-erosion measures for Majuli and Dhola Hatiguli is not spent properly is also a matter of deep concern.

The board has sent a scheme of Rs one hundred thirty crore for the anti-erosion measures for Rohmoria in Dibrugarh district. However, Dutta alleged that the Centre’s Water Resources Ministry is sleeping on the file. This non-sanction of the proposal by the UPA government at the Centrer in spite of the Prime Minister‘s assurances is another example of the betrayal of the Centre towards this region, S Dutta alleged. He also condemned the inactivity of MP’s from the state which includes the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and called upon them to maintain a strict vigil in the matter. THE SENTINEL
