TURA, March 12 – After the decision of the Congress to field former woman legislator Deborah Marak to take on sitting NCP MP Ms Agatha K Sangma for the Tura parliamentary seat, two other parties have decided to jump into the election bandwagon.
The Achik National Congress (Democratic) has decided to field Boston Marak, a member of the Garo Hills Autonomous district Council, as its candidate to take on Ms Agatha K Sangma.
The regional UDP, which is a partner in the MPA government in Meghalaya, has also decided to put up a candidate and its Garo Hills unit has forwarded the name of Ms Arlene M N Sangma for approval by UDP President and Chief Minister Donkupar Roy.
The ANC-D had fielded Boston Marak during last year’s by-election to Tura parliamentary seat but had to settle in third place. This time, the party is optimistic that its support base will rise and has committed itself to spearhead the movement for a separate state and other regional issues. ASSAM TRIBUNE
