Nepal keen to promote trade with North East

GUWAHATI, March 4 – To explore the market in the North East, Nepal has conducted a study in the region to expand volume of business.

Talking to this correspondent here today, Navin Raj Sharma, a senior official of Ministry of Commerce of Nepal, said that the volume of trade between Nepal and India has been growing at a good pace. “We have nearly 70% of trade with India, but considering the upswing in the Indian market, we want to increase our trade. Moreover, North East India is a potential market and therefore, the Nepalese companies are keen to increase the volume of trade.

Four leading companies of Nepal including Asian Thai Foods, Dugar Spices and Food Products Private Limited, MM Pet Udyog Private Limited and Khokana Stone Carving are participating in the ongoing 16 th International Guwahati Trade Fair.

Providing feedback on the response from the people, Sharma informed that the volume of business in the trade fair has been good so far. “Our food products have already dominated the North market. As per the statistics, of the 70% of total trade, this region contributes nearly 17%,” he added.

Asked whether he had any plan to set up plant in the North East considering the growing market, the senior official said that he would share his information with the leading companies of Nepal. “As India is a potential market, we are keen to expand our trade ties,” He added. Sharma, however, said that the traders of the North East should also explore the Nepal market. “Handicraft items of the region are famous and the traders associated with handicraft business can explore our market,” he observed.
