Braveheart Savitri

My sweet little Maa, Savitri Konwar, was indeed a braveheart. When she was just a forty seven year old widow, she rushed out of our house at Sochal in Sixmile, Guwahati, to save the life of our neighbour who was about to be struck down by swords and staves by the locals. She fell atop his body and told the locals, “You had better kill me first, rather than kill my good neighbour!” Stunned, the locals left her neighbour alone. When she was in the ICU in Metro Hospital, Delhi, in early September, 2005, she told me, “Annie, the doctors are making a normal woman sick. I am actually O.K. Please help me get down from the bed and let us go home walking together.” I shall always remember her innocence and great spiritual strength of her delicate frail body and her loveliness. I bid her a tearful farewell on the day she died, i.e. 18th September, 2005.
