39 Mebo Assembly: Lombo Versus Ralom

The right bank of Siang in East Siang is witnessing a full frontal turf war between Congress heavyweight Lombo Tayeng and Young Turk Ralom Borang of NCP. This is the second time they are encountering each other. The first time was in the last Assembly Election of 2004 when seasoned leader Lombo had vanquished young Ralom by a slender margin of a little more than 100 votes.

‘The main strength of Lombo Tayeng is his past performance in the smooth administration of the area and the developmental works he took up in road communication and construction of RCC school buildings in the constituency,’ said Nakmin Perme, an ardent supporter and election agent of the incumbent MLA. Further, the forthcoming Rs 23-crore drinking water project scheme for Mebo and neighbouring areas is being lauded as a major brawny point for Tayeng by his supporters.

Ralom Borang trained as an electrical engineer is a young entrepreneur. He is also the son of former MLA and cabinet minister Kabang Borang. Amongst his followers, Ralom is appreciated for his social contributions. Reportedly, both the Independent Zila Parishad Members (ZPMs) of the Assembly segment belonged to Ralom’s camp.

At the moment, ZPMs are equally divided into two camps. And much will depend on the coordination among the panchayat leaders down the line under these ZPMs. THE SENTINEL
