JORHAT, Oct 9: For Jorhatians along with the 5, 10, 20 and 25 paisa coins, 50 paisa coins have long gone out of circulation and following closely are Re 1 and Rs 2 currency. In clear violation of Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines, neither shopkeepers nor rickshaw-pullers accept the coin and now a days are averse to accept Re 1 and Rs 2 notes as well.
Coins of same denomination are however, accepted willingly. SBI Zonal Chief Suresh Neog, categorically said that the RBI had not specified the disuse of the 50 paisa coins nor currency notes of these denominations.
But go the any shop in Jorhat and the shopkeeper doles out a toffee instead of the change and directly refuses if you had over a 50 paisa coin.
In front of the court, however, two men sit with coins of all denominations spread out on a cloth and if you hand over a Rs 2 note, you will be given change of Re 1. Go to Guwahati and one can spend all the 50 paises one has collected. In Jorhat there has been no protest against this attitude. The people pacifically but grudgingly accepting this as the norm and the collective mentality of rich Jorhatians seem to say, “keep the change”. THE SENTINEL
