Lapang discusses problems with BSNL

SHILLONG, Oct 13: Chief Minister DD Lapang today met BSNL officials to discuss problems regarding mobile phone connectivity, broadband connections and telephone connections in the border areas. Over the matter of poor mobile phone connectivity, the BSNL has assured the Chief Minister that since the upgradation of facilities to 3G and change of the switching system from Nortel to Ericsson is taking place there is bound to be some disturbances for some time. However, it is the endeavour of the organization to ensure good connectivity throughout the State and once these steps are completed, the mobile connectivity will be much better. If electricity connection is made available, BSNL will ensure completion of the whole process within two months.

All the district headquarters except Williamnagar have been connected by Broadband connections and the people should make full use of the same. The connectivity at Williamnagar will be finalized by December, 2009. BSNL has also assured that all the blocks, subdivisions and district headquarters would be connected through 2 MBPS leased lines so that the Government’s Statewide Area Network could be in place at the earliest.

Connectivity of border areas was also discussed and BSNL is putting up an extra 143 numbers of towers to ensure good coverage of mobile phone connectivity. Apart from these, around 104 towers are also being erected by the KEC International under the USO funds.
