GUWAHATI, Nov 3: A team of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) led by advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya today gheraoed a city hotel where interview for two clerical posts of the United Bank of India (UBI) was to take place. While the interview had to be called off, the agitating students condemned the UBI for depriving the local educated unemployment youths of job opportunities.
AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said, ‘‘The bank, in its job advertisement, had assured the people of appointing local youths for clerical posts. But candidates from Jharkhand, Bihar and other places were also called for the interview today.’’
The UBI, in its advertisement, had listed 100 clerical posts for Assam, two for Manipur, two for Mizoram, six for Arunachal Pradesh, seven for Nagaland, 11 for Meghalaya, 40 for Tripura and six posts for Sikkim. In addition, 35 candidates were selected for the post of Probationary Officer from Assam and the rest of the Northeast.
Meanwhile, following today’s gherao, a meeting took place between the AASU leaders and UBI officials, with the latter assuring the former of 100 per cent appointment of local youths to vacant posts.
Given the increasing unemployment problem in the State, the AASU leadership has demanded of the Government to make provisions for employment of local youths in private and public sector jobs. Bhattacharya also criticized the Tarun Gogoi Government for not taking any initiative in this direction. THE SENTINEL
