GUWAHATI, Nov 9: Liquefied Petroleum Gas, or LPG as it is more popularly known as, is an indispensable part of our daily life. But the day might come soon when this essential household item will no longer be available in the State. Around 40 LPG bullet cars carrying LPG enter the State from Barauni and Haldia every day. But the collection of goonda tax at Srirampur Gate on NH-37 may very well force truckers to stop entering the State, sources said. A North East Bulk LPG Transporters Association source said, “From November 1 last, goonda tax of Rs 200-Rs 500 is being collected from each LPG truck in the name of the ex-BLT Welfare Committee. We have already registered a complaint with the Srirampur IC but no action has been taken till now.” The source further said, “We will be submitting a memorandum to the Chief Secretary in this regard very soon. If no action is taken even then, we will have no other option but to stop the plying of vehicles in the State.” THE SENTINEL
