Majuli Raax festival enthrals foreigners

JORHAT/NAGAON, Nov 3 : The people of Majuli have been celebrating Raax Festival in as many as 35 stages since yesterday. The 22 xatras located in the river island also organized their traditional Raax Festival. Auniati, Garmur, Dakhinpat, Bhogpur, Natun Kamalabari, Uttar Kamalabari, Bihimpur, Samaguri and other xatras have been celebrating the festival with religious and spiritual fervour.

The historic Bengenaati Xatra, however, is busy in some other activities. The xatra has been under a serious erosion threat from the Brahmaputra for the last couple of months. The xatradhikar and other baisnabs of the xatra are busy with works for shifting it to a new location.

According to sources, as many as 19 foreign tourists are in the cultural hub only to see the Raax Festival in different stages. The foreigners have already watched the Raax Festival last night in Auniati, Natun Kamalabari and some other Raax stages.

Talking to The Sentinel over telephone, a German tourist said: “It’s indeed an amazing sight and an impressive experience for us. We are very happy to witness such a unique cultural activity. ”

When asked about Majuli, another foreign tourist said: “Actually Majuli is the glory of the people of this land. The people of Majuli should protect its unique culture and rich heritage.”

The Brihattar Senshowa Raax Utsav Samity of Nagaon has also been celebrating the festival with a four-day-long programme since yesterday. Naamprasanga, bhaona, Vijoyasur Badh etc marked the programmes. THE SENTINEL
