ITANAGAR, Nov 16 – Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu today made a fervent appeal to the media to disseminate the correct information to the people ‘without distorting the facts’ and help the society to grow further.
“As the State is passing through a transitional period to adjust with the changing time and need, the media both print and electronic have a pivotal role to play to help the society move towards further development and prosperity.
I appeal to the media to disseminate accurate information to the people without any prejudice or distorting the facts. It should not come under any pressure from any quarter while reporting the news and views forthe society,” Khandu assertively said.
The Chief Minister was addressing media persons at the Banquet Hall here on the occasion of National Press Day, celebrated jointly by Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists and Itanagar Press Club in collaboration with the State Directorate of Information & Public Relations.
“Despite all odds, including the communication bottlenecks, the media in Arunachal is doing a great job and contributing immensely towards the socio-economic and political development of the State. I salutethe media for extensively covering the State Government’s developmental stories, more particularly the recent visit by the Dalai Lama to the State,” said Khandu.
The Chief Minister announced a corpus fund of Rs 10 lakh for the media persons. He had in 2008 also provided a corpus fund of Rs 10 lakh for media persons in distress.
He presented Ipi Basar and Tashi Khandu, a government bus driver, with cash award of Rs 10,000 each along with citation and trophies given by the press fraternity. Khandu also honoured them with Rs one lakh each in recognition of their bravery.
The 17-year-old Ipi Basar had saved two persons from a fire at Basar in West Siang district in September this year. The 42-year-old Tashi Khandu on July 1 had encountered a group of armed Bodo militants who started firing at an APST bus he was driving from Bomdila, in between Bhalukpong and Assam’s Balipara and saved the lives of as many as 30 passengers.
Although the theme for this year’s National Press Day celebration was ‘The changing face of Indian media’, the press fraternity here observed the Day in a different way by organising a debate on the topic ‘The media in Arunachal is yet to fulfil the emerging expectations of its people’.
Twelve students from six institutions – two each from Rajiv Gandhi University, Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, NERIST, Dera Natung Govt College, Don Bosco College and North East Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital took part in the competition.
