After ULFA, it’s NSCN now under siege in B’desh

SHILLONG, Dec 8: The NSCN cadres based in Bangladesh are reportedly said to be under siege, informed sources here. Nothing definite is known about the number of cadres held up by he Bangladesh security agencies in a limited territory, but sources said the NSCN cadres’ movements from the hideout have been restricted. Similarly, it was not clear which faction of the NSCN that has been under siege, nor the number of the Naga insurgents holed up, sources added. While the NSCN (IM) leadership could not be contacted for their comments despite all efforts, Intelligence sources told The Sentinel that all the armed militant groups of the North-east were under pressure from the government of Bangladesh. “Bangladesh’s recent crackdown on the North-east ultras has made many to flee from their safe havens”, stated the sources, “those held up are expected to experience the same treatment.” Source, however, ruled out any immediate pushing, even as they said that there was nothing better than to have a discreet handover of the wanted insurgents.

There is no extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh as yet, even though speculations are rife that such a treaty would soon be signed between the two countries during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forthcoming visit to India. But till then, the best way to restore the friendly relations is to use the “other route,” observed a senior Home Ministry official, adding, “Bangladesh reciprocation could open up the road to more developments in this front.”

Such optimism from the Indian security and Intelligence agencies came in the wake of alleged surrender of ULFA leaders in the Indo-Bangladesh border areas and the subsequent truth that they were handed by the Bangladesh authorities to India. THE SENTINEL
