GUWAHATI, Dec 19: The Chamber of Small Industry Associations (COSIA) has expressed concern over the lack of micro and small industries in Assam despite the fact that the State supplies tonnes of raw materials for such industries in other parts of the country. COSIA secretary general Dilip Salvekar and ex-committee member Sailen Barua told a media conference today that small traders in Assam were incurring losses because several lakh tonnes of raw materials were taken outside the State on a daily basis.
According to Salvekar and Barua, koni dhan, a kind of small rice, grown in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and parts of Arunachal Pradesh was being used for making food products in Nasik, Maharashtra. At least seven rice mills and about 25 small industries have been established in Maharashtra on the basis of raw materials supplied by Assam. They said people of Assam and other parts of the Northeast were not aware of the fact that rice, banana, etc grown in the region could help small traders and others produce food items for their economic development. On January 19 next, COSIA will organize a seminar-cum-exhibition at Shilpgram, Guwahati where food products made from rice, banana, bamboo, etc would be put on display. THE SENTINEL
