DIBRUGARH, Dec 5: The Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed cheques under Majoni scheme and keys of bicycles to Asha workers at a function held at Chowkidinghee playground here today.
In his speech, the minister said that it was possible to achieve total sanitation in Dibrugarh by next year if there was proper co-ordination between Asha workers and Public Health Engineering. He further revealed that, the preliminary work for a district civil hospital and a model hospital in each of the seven legislative assembly constituencies of the district was complete. While going over the achievements of the Health Department, Dr Sarma acknowledged that the Majoni scheme failed to make the impact it should have initially but expressed hope that it would be a success as the technical snags had been addressed. He urged upon the Asha workers to achieve greater heights and at the same time warned that non-performance would invite termination of job.
One thousand sixty nine bicycles will be distributed to Asha workers while one thousand cheques of five thousand rupees given away to mothers of girl child.
The Deputy Commissioner, GD Tripathi, briefly spoke on the occasion. He stressed on reducing of infant mortality rate and said that special efforts should be made to make immunization, ICDS and total sanitation campaign successful.
Earlier, the Assistant Engineer of PHE, BJ Sarma, gave a presentation on the co-ordination of NRHM and Complete Sanitation Campaign in which he gave special emphasis on the role of Asha workers can play to make the schemes work at the grassroot-level.
The Joint Director of Health Services, Dr PC Hazarika, delivered the welcome address and read out a report on the schemes implemented in the district.
Among others, the Chairperson of Zila Parishad, Meena Teli, Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Jibantara Ghatowar, and the Regional Director of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Partha Gogoi, were also present on the occasion. THE SENTINEL
