Educational scenario across the states
— K K Sen
The education sector is being assigned top priority in the current Five Year Plan as literacy alone can make India a super power. A retrospective analysis reveals that people gradually succeeded in focussing the torch of knowledge, spreading the spectrum of civilisation and turning the dream of innovation into reality. Exploration is being initiated to reflect the light of literacy and education among the masses. Different academic institutions have come up to play a significant role in imparting quality education encompassing a large segment of far-flung rural areas too. They have emerged as growing inputs for spreading knowledge right from the cradle of primary level to the zenith of higher education. It was not long before there prevailed a great sense of respect and loyalty to the faculties. The faculties also left no stone unturned for their dedicated services despite lacking in infrastructural facility. Students were mostly accommodated under a dilapidated structure having no electric fans or even lights. Mats were utilised to satisfy the purpose of sitting in lieu of chairs and benches. Availability of published books were also very scarce. Amidst all these inconveniences students endeavoured their best to cross the hurdle with flying colours. Most of our ancestors though not highly educated could converse or narrate well in English or vernacular. But of late, not to speak of students, even some teachers lack vocabulary knowledge. Even some graduates are not competent enough to write a sentence correctly or converse fluently. Who is responsible for this crippled educational system? Unlike earlier times, a tremendous diversification has been noticed in the educational system right from the infrastructure to the institution. Despite the existence of such a healthy environment, why has the educational scenario not been improved to the desired extent is a hallmark question all around the society. The existing teacher-student ratio to the magnitude of 1:100 at present cannot be considered to be effective as compared to the ideal norm of 1:40, contrary to which surplus teachers are also noticed here and there keeping an imbalance in the system. It is also learnt that a vacuum of over 16,000 posts of teachers is still prevalent throughout the State at different levels.
So an effective balance of teacher-student ratio is a crying need of the hour. No doubt rationalisation in this respect is possible by redeployment of faculties from surplus to deficit institutions. The deterioration of quality of education is attributed largely to disearnestness to studies and irregularity in attendance. Students’ involvement mostly in events or extra-curricular activities ignoring studies has become a serious concern. Unnecessary wastage of parents’ hard earned money without bothering a little for sincere studies is considered to be a serious offence. Teachers are to some extent responsible for the emerging downslide in educational activities, as knowledge in certain topics is too limited to make an indepth analysis.
It is also noticed that some faculties intentionally avoid detailing a topic despite having conceptual ability, which is partly attributed to impatience or interest in private coaching. There are also other considerations which weight heavier on the teachers’ conscience. Most of the teachers are characterised by professional attitude, which leads them in teaching pursuit for financial return rather than welfare of the learners. If the teachers, on who rests the responsibility of building a nation, accountability in converting the destiny and moulding the character of future citizens are not sincere in this effort, the educational scenario across the states or nation can never be improved. The commitment of teachers can dominate effectively in these endeavours. On their shoulder rests the expectation of the universe, which facilitates them to nurture and create the leadership of tomorrow armed with quality education and fuelled with passion to cultivate a prospective future. As our country is stepping forward to dominate and carve out a niche in the global map, it is now the crucial moment for young generations to play the role of drivers of change, backed by quality education.
Present-day scholars cross ever the threshold into a bright tomorrow to realise the hopes of people that rests on them. They must endeavor whole-heartedly for a brighter tomorrow, which is not merely for themselves, but for the children of successive generations. Quality education mostly relies on the strength of academic institutions as engines of education cannot be geared up if the institutions are not equipped wit competent faculties.
A good academic institution focusses on the light of knowledge that lights up for a longer duration without any scope of diminishing. Sometimes strict rules and imposition of laws are also considered to be a must to bring forth a dynamic change in the educational curriculum. Breaking the backbone of an institution by an insincere faculty should never be tolerated. A practical”, sincere and efficient fellow is really an asset of society for dynamic revolutionary change in an organisation. Sometimes it is said that students have been provided with fishing rod to catch the fish. But their performance needs to be reviewed through a regular test that is to be followed by effective guidance if necessary. Strictness in administration and academic discipline may go a long way in improving the scenario to the fullest extent.
