NEW DELHI, Feb 17 – Involvement of Bangladeshis in Guwahati blasts has not come to light, even as Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today reiterated that the Centre has trained special focus on the internal security situation in the North-eastern States.
The assertion about the Bangladeshi angle to the blast was based on the report of Assam Government, it was clarified by Minister of State for Home Affairs Radhika V Selvi. However, the Minister added that during investigation, involvement of ULFA militants have come to light.
Earlier, replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said that special attention is being paid to the NE region and that he had visited Assam, Manipur and Nagaland to take stock of the prevailing situation.
In a Lok Sabha, the Government admitted that there were reports of various militant outfits in the North-east, indulging in extortion to collect money from various industrial and business houses, contractors, transporters, officials and politicians. Details of cases registered are not centrally maintained, Selvi said.
Chidambaram, during his recent tours to the region, as also during meeting with security officials, has stressed on putting an end to extortion racket, asking officials to mount crackdowns. source: assam tribune
