GANGTOK, March 13 – Noted film director Ugyen Chopel from Sikkim has been conferred with Sarjak Samman, one of the highest awards conferred by the Film Directors’ Guild of Nepal.
The award is given by the Guild to prominent film directors who have contributed towards promotion of films in Nepal. In a press statement, Chopel said that this was a great honour bestowed on him as it was conferred on him.
Chopel, who hails from West Sikkim has been involved in film industry for almost two and half decades. The joy is double as 2009 is the 20th anniversary of his first directorial venture ‘Saino’ which has been regarded as one of the greatest Nepali hits of all times.
The reputed film maker, who is also the nephew of Bollywood actor Danny Denzongpa, has several Nepali and Hindi hits to his credit. His last Bollywood flick was ‘Dil Jo Bhi Kahay’ produced by Romesh Sharma starring Amitabh Bachchan and Revathi.
He has also several documentaries to his credit and also directed Ajnabi, a tele-serial telecast both in Hindi and Bengali in the past. The Bengali version was titled Bandhu. The award ceremony was held at Kathmandu last week during the Guild’s annual general body meeting.
Chopel was last in Kathmandu in mid-December last year as a jury member for the Kathmandu International mountain film festival (KIMFF), an important festival held annually.
