Manipur ready to felicitate ace boxers

IMPHAL, June 16 – The sports fraternity of Manipur lauded the recent performance of Mayengbam Suranjoy and Thokchom Nanao in the just concluded Asian Boxing Championships at Zhuhai city, China.

At Suranjoy’s native village, Uchiwa Leirak Achouba, in Imphal West district, there was joy after Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports Minister N Biren announced a grand reception for the boxers when they reach Manipur.

Nanao’s father, Thokchom Totobi, told The Assam Tribune that he hopes next time his son wins the gold for the country.

Vice-president of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation and general secretary of the All Manipur Boxing Association (AMBA) Khoibi Salam hailed the outstanding achievements of the two boxers. He said that both the pugilists have a bright future. “We know of their talents and the AMBA would be organising a grand reception at Imphal for the two boxers,” Salam said.

S Sakhigopal, a functionary of the Billiards and Snooker Association said the extraordinary performance of the two State pugilists would prove to be a big impetus to sports not only in Manipur but in the entire North-east. Both Suranjoy and Nanao reached New Delhi today.
