JORHAT, June 2: A one-day regional stakeholders’ meeting was organized at the Rain Forest Research Institute, here recently to gauge the strengths in terms of manpower, infrastructure facilities and ongoing research projects of each of the research division and to chalk out formulations of future projects.
The meeting was formally inaugurated by Sunil Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya, by lighting lamp. NK Vasu, director, Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat welcomed the chief guest and representatives from State Forest Department of Arunachal Pradesh, Asom, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and other stakeholders. He explained the concept and purpose of the meeting. I Ao, Group Coordinator Research RFRI, Jorhat presented in brief the research activities of the Institute. The chief guest in his inaugural address congratulated NK Vasu, director, Rain Forest Research Institute for organizing the stakeholders’ meets and requested the expert delegates for their expert advice and suggestions in formulation of project concept notes in prioritized areas. I Ao, Group Coordinator Research, RFRI, offered the vote of thanks. Two technical sessions were conducted during the meeting. During first technical session, brief presentations about the strengths in terms of manpower, infrastructure facilities and ongoing research projects of each of the research divisions that were forest protection, shifting cultivation, silviculture and forest management, ecology and biodiversity, bio-prospecting and indigenous knowledge, biotechnology and genetics were presented by respective head of divisions. Detailed discussions followed resulting into identification of stakeholders’ needs. Discussion on climate change with special emphasis on bamboo and rattan and lands under shifting cultivation was held during the second technical session. The meeting ended with a valedictory function chaired by Sunil Kumar, CCF, Meghalaya. The recommendations were discussed and finalized by the house.
