AGARTALA, March 4 – In a bid to offer better air traffic facilities, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has unveiled a number of projects to expand and modernise the Agartala Airport.
The plan include, construction of new terminal building at a cost of Rs 4.99 crore, new ATC control tower with an estimated cost of Rs 5.7 crore, instrumental runway with precision approach at an estimated cost of Rs 34 crore, apron and taxi ways at a cost of Rs 18.65 crore.
The AAI has taken modernisation programme of 35 domestic airports all over the country in three phases. Of the 35 domestic airports, Agartala Airport has been included in the ambitious modernisation programme.
The AAA also dwelt on the construction of new terminal, expansion of parking spaces. The proposals have been forwarded to regional headquarters. The construction works will start very shortly, said an official of AAI here.
Tight security has been made in and around the Agartala Airport. More than one hundred jawans of CISF are engaged in providing security to the country’s most hypersensitive Airport, he said. The parameter lighting system adds extra advantage to the jawans to keep close vigil even in the night. On the contingency plan, the official said, a full-fledged mechanism is in operation to handle any kind of security threat.
Meanwhile, the North East Shuttle in corporation with small fixed wing aircraft is going to launch their service very shortly at Agartala Airport. The company has identified the Airport as a permanent base station, he said. The aircraft has a seat capacity of nine passengers.
With the operation of this aircraft, more airline companies would like to choose the Agartala Airport to start air service. Assam Tribune
