AICC names 11 Asom candidates, Kirip Chaliha out

.
NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, March 12: Against the stand taken by All India Congress Committee’s general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, not a single youth candidate has made it to the list of Congress Lok Sabha poll candidates for Asom. Barring candidates for Dhubri and Lakhimpur constituencies, AICC spokesperson Manish Tiwari today announced 11 candidates who surprisingly included sitting Tezpur MP Moni Kumar Subba whose credentials as Indian citizen are open to question and are being investigated.

The 11 candidates who have been cleared for Congress tickets are Robin Bordoloi for Guwahati, former minister Ismail Hussain for Barpeta, Anil Raja for Nagaon, sitting MP Moni Kumar Subba for Tezpur, Union minister BK Handique for Jorhat, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Pabon Singh Ghatowar for Dibrugarh, Madhab Rajbongshi for Mangaldai, Union Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Dev for Silchar, sitting MP LM Shuklabaidya for Karimganj, Biren Singh Ingti for Diphu and Dip Gogoi for Kaliabor. Candidates for Lakhimpur and Dhubri are yet to be named. While Rani Narah and Bobeeta Sarma have been vying for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha ticket, sitting MP Anwar Hussain, former minister Wazed Ali Choudhury and Abdul Hamid have been in the race for the Dhubri ticket. Talking to The Sentinel from New Delhi, APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita said: “Candidates for Dhubri and Lakhimpur constituencies will be named within a day or two.”

Of the nine sitting MPs of the Congress from Asom, the fate of Anwar Hussain is yet to be decided, while sitting Barpeta MP Golam Osmani is not a ticket aspirant of the party this time around. Among the remaining seven MPs, barring Kirip Chaliha known for his anti-Gogoi stance, all got party tickets. Chaliha had sought party ticket either from Guwahati or Mangaldai.

With today’s announcement of candidates of the party, there will be only one woman candidate in the Congress from Asom, and that is for the Lakhimpur seat, but there will be no youth leader of the party in the fray in the State. This is despite the repeated announcements made by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi that the youth would be given more importance in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Robin Bordoloi and Anil Raja are new faces, but they are not young leaders. East Guwahati MLA Robin Bordoloi, barring his family legacy by virtue of being the son of Gopinath Bordoloi, has literally no standing as a political leader as to be roped in for the prestigious Guwahati seat.

When contacted, sitting Guwahati MP Kirip Chaliha only said that he was busy at a meeting.
