MPA crisis deepens; floor test on March 17

SHILLONG, March 12: Meghalaya crisis deepened further with both the NCP-UDP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) and Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) claiming to have the magic figure in the sixty-member Assembly. The political situation in the State deteriorated with the withdrawal of support by lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator Paul Lyngdoh and the subsequent resignation by Hills State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLA and Health Minister Dr A Pariong on Wednesday night.

While it is apparent that the State has plunged into a serious political crisis, both the MPA and MUA assert their claims of having the number. Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy admitted that Paul Lyngdoh has left the MPA fold, but was categorical in stating today, “I will prove the number on the floor of the House”.

On Thursday morning, Roy met the Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary and apprised him of the latest political development in the State. The Chief Minister said the Governor has agreed to fix March 17 as the day for the trial of strength, besides claiming that the MPA number stands at 30 in the sixty-member Assembly.

Nothwistanding the MPA claims, MUA leader DD Lapang told newsmen after his meeting with the State Governor today that the Chief Minister and leader of the MPA should gracefully step down. “I told the Governor that the MPA has lost the majority and he should step down gracefully”

“Why should everyone be so impatient on our endeavour to form the government”, stated Lapang said while replying to a query, even as he categorically claimed that the KHNAM legislator Paul Lyngdoh and defected HSPDP legislator A Pariong are very much in the MUA fold.

Asked about the other legislators who will join the MUA fold, Lapang said, “This is not the time to divulge, but feelers are coming from all sources”. He even said the Congress as a responsible party is ready to take the mantle in forming the Government.

Amidst the claims and counter claims, the residences of Lapang and Roy are now the epicentres of all political activities. Hectic parleys in residences of the leader of Opposition D D Lapang and Chief Minister Donkupar Roy are going on. THE SENTINEL
