Chemical effluents from oil wells causing health hazards

Correspondent
AMGURI, March 4 – A multinational oil company of Canada-Canaro Resource Company Ltd has been certified as an environment conscious oil company credited for protecting environment, by some top ranking nature-loving voluntary organisations of Assam. However, in reality, it has been disposing of noxious chemical effluent untreated from its oil wells under Amguri LAC, causing health hazards to the people of surrounding areas.

According to information received, the chemical effluent– discarded from Duliabasti oil well is causing land, water as well as air pollution. The noxious smell of chemicals like sulphur, ammonia and others coming out from the waste tank, where effluent of Duliabasti oil well is dumped, cause respiratory problems to the people of the surrounding area. It needs to be mentioned that the young students of Duliabasti Primary school situated in front of the waste tank in question are also physically and mentally disturbed by the noxious smells in their studies. The possibility of their physical as well as mental development being retarded cannot be ruled out, if they are exposed to such hazardous smells for a longer period of time.

The waste tank, where Canaro Resource Company Ltd. has been dumping the effluent, is not sufficient in capacity to hold the daily quantity of the effluent.

It was learnt that more than 30,000 litres of effluents are discarded daily into the tank. As a result, the effluent seeps out through the soil and goes to the nearby Dulia Nala. The contaminated water from the Nala flows to Bagjan rivulet and gets– mixed up with the water. This system of operation has been continuing since about two years back.

It is worth mentioning that the residents of the aforesaid area are ex-tea-garden workers in majority. They are quite unaware of pollution and are educationally backward too. It has been alleged that the multinational company Canaro Resource Co Ltd has taken the advantage of the ignorence of these people. Assam Tribune
