National seminar on NE plant resources


GUWAHATI, March 12 – The two-day national seminar on ‘Exploration, Utilisation and Strategy Action Plan for Sustainable Management of Plant Resources’ was held at the Gauhati University recently.

The seminar was organised by the Botany Department, Gauhati University and was sponsored by several Central Govenment departments, UGC, WWF-India and NEDFi.

More than 300 Plant scientists from different parts of the country took part in the seminar.

The seminar was chaired by Prof SK Sarma, head, Department of Botrany, GU and Dean, Faculty of Science. In his welcome address, Prof. Sarma mentioned about the objectives of the national seminar and appealed to all section to preserve and for judicious uses of ‘Green Gold’ of the North Eastern region.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Medhi highlighted how Assamese culture specially the Rongali Bihu relates with the Kopou Phul and called upon the researchers to give special attention to that particular plant which can restore our culture in the future.

Prof Medhi also added that the Gauhati University would take up the matter to open up two new science centres – a biotechnology park and a biodiversity centre – for the best utilization of natural and human resources of North Eastern region.

The chief guest of the function, Dr SV Ngachan, director, ICAR, Shillong, also addressed the scientists and spoke about the richness of the plant diversity of the region. ASSAM TRIBUNE
