NCP an alternative to SDF in Sikkim: Sangma

CORRESPONDENT
JORETHANG, March 12 – Nationalist Congress Party’s in-charge for the North-eastern States, PA Sangma today said that the party is set to emerge as a potential alternative to the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) during this upcoming Assembly election.

“There is a political vacuum in Sikkim after 15 years of continuous rule of SDF. People in Sikkim want a change but they are not finding a viable alternative. People have already tasted and rejected Congress in Sikkim and now NCP will be the third alternative for Sikkimese people,” said Sangma during a public meeting here at Jorethang ground.

Sangma is in Sikkim for a two-day visit to oversee the State unit’s elections preparations and is accompanied by his daughter and MP, Agatha Sangma.

Sangma added that people have rejected the Congress as an alternative to SDF as the people are not happy with the local leadership of the Congress.

“The prospects of NCP coming up as a strong alternative to the SDF have been felt as well. The proof is today’s public meeting at Jorethang where the ruling SDF party had put all efforts to obstruct the meeting. This is a big recognition to NCP in Sikkim”, said Sangma.

The NCP leader said that the party will field all candidates in the 32 Assembly seats and the sole Lok Sabha seat. The list will be declared on March 12 during a meeting of the Central Working Committee of NCP, he said.

The State NCP president Ashoke Tsong will be reaching Delhi on March 12 with the final list of the party candidates. “Our party manifesto will also be released on that day with one chapter especially devoted to Sikkim,” said Sangma.

Sangma also assured that only NCP can solve the burning issues of Sikkim due to its strong position in the national level. There is a difference between the demands raised by SDF and the demands that will be raised by NCP, he said.

“There is a vast difference between SDF and NCP in the national power corridors. NCP can solve all the pending problems of Sikkim,” said Sangma. He pointed out that his daughter Agatha Sangma had already raised a voice in the Parliament over the Limboo Tamang seat issue.

“I have demanded an ordinance from the Ministry of Tribal affairs for providing seats to the Limboo Tamang communities of Sikkim in the Assembly. NCP will be following this up soon”, said Miss Sangma.

Sangma was also in favour of enhancing the 32 seater Assembly of Sikkim to 40 to solve the Limboo Tamang seat reservation issue.

Earlier, Sikkim NCP president Ashok Tsong in his address said that time has come for a people’s revolution in Sikkim to wipe out the SDF party. “People’s revolution can take place anytime after March 15. There will be only 12 hours ultimatum given after which the revolution will take place”, said Mr. Tsong.

Slamming the ruling SDF party, Tsong said that no opposition parties had dared to come out openly like NCP. “No opposition parties had ever conducted public meeting at Jorethang. NCP not only did this meeting but also opened its branch office here at Jorethang”, he said.

“NCP is here to save Sikkim and Sikkimese people”, said Tsong accusing the SDF party of putting brakes on the political rights of the Limboo Tamang seats till 2026. ASSAM TRIBUNE
