KSU announces agitations

SHILLONG, Sept 16: Peeved at the government’s decision not to review the Cabinet decision on pre-mining development activities, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today announced a series of agitation programmes.

The announcement was made by the KSU after the expiry of its deadline served for the government to review the government’s decision of allowing Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) to carry out development activities in the sites of uranium deposit in West Khasi Hills. The government last night sent a letter to the students’ body declining to review the decision.

KSU president Samuel B Jyrwa told reporters after the central executive meeting this evening they had decided to start their protest by burning of the government’s effigy on September 18 in all the district headquarters of Khasi and Jaintia Hills. On September 21 and 22, the students’ body will distribute pamphlets among the public to create an awareness on the ‘wrong decision’ taken by the government, he said, adding that on September 22 a sit-in demonstration would also be staged by the KSU.

“This will be peaceful agitation based on democracy,” Jyrwa said. He said the KSU would also seek for public opinion at the public meeting on September 23 at Motphran. Jyrwa is firm that the students’ body will continue to pressurize the government if their demands are not met by September 23.

Reacting to the letter sent by the government last night, Jyrwa said, “The government cannot decide on its own without getting a consensus from the public.”

The Meghalaya Government has decided to lease out land to UCIL to carry out developmental activities on the 422 hectares of land for a period of 30 years. This move was not accepted by many social organizations of the State who felt that the government’s decision was a total sell out of land to UCIL. They believed when UCIL completes the develo-pmental works in the area, mining will cause health hazards. THE SENTINEL
