Lapang blamed for Langpih situation

SHILLONG, Sept 16: Residents of the Langpih area have blamed Chief Minister DD Lapang and his Cabinet for encouraging influx of Nepali immigrants into the area. Last night, 150 Nepali immigrants had entered Umsawli village in the Langpih area and started building settlements breaching the quit notice of the village council comprising of chieftains from Hima Raidmynsaw.

Speaking to The Sentinel over phone, a resident of the village said the Nepali immigrants entered the village and started constructing settlements at Umsawli, an area where the Asom Government had earlier constructed a road.

“This sudden entry of the Nepalese was supported by the Asom Government,” a resident of Langpih village claimed, adding that the stretch of the road constructed by the Asom Government from Mawsikar to Langpih has now been occupied by Nepalese from Asom.
Criticizing the Asom Government, the residents said, “The Asom Government has encouraged the Nepalese to enter Langpih in connivance with Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang and his Cabinet.” They said that if Lapang was serious in settling the border disputes he would have started talks with the Asom Government. “If this is not true, then where are his talks scheduled with his Asom counterpart?” the residents queried.

Two months back, the Asom Government had responded to Meghalaya’s call for talks and invited Chief Minister DD Lapang for a threadbare discussion on the matter. However, Lapang sought more time for preparation of documents that would substantiate Meghalaya’s claim over Langpih and other disputed areas of the State. However, the Meghalaya Government has not been able to put together the requisite papers till date.

Official sources of the Revenue Department of the State said it will be difficult for Meghalaya to assemble the papers as most of the areas in contention have not been registered with government agencies.

Confirming the report that 150 Nepali immigrants have occupied the disputed area, Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong Langpih area president T Nonglang expressed his doubt that the Meghalaya Government if was serious about curtailing influx and settling the Langpih issue. Nonglang said, “The Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) has retracted from its earlier assurance it made when they took power from the UDP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) with the help of Asom Health Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma.” He added: “With the Assam Police encouraging illegal immigration, it won’t be possible to restore peace in this place if the Meghalaya Government is not serious over the issue.”

Nonglang also said a public rally will be held on Friday at Langpih village in protest against the frequent incursion by outsiders and inaction of the Meghalaya Government. THE SENTINEL
