AHRC orders probe into Bhimajuli killings

GUWAHATI, Oct 9: Based on a petition filed by Manab Adhikar Sangram Samity (MASS) president Bubu Moni Goswami regarding the recent killings at Bhimajuli village of Sonitpur district, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) today issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Asom, demanding an inquiry into the matter.

The Commission seeks information regarding ex-gratia payments made to the kith and kin of the deceased victims and injured persons as well as the measures undertaken by the Government to avert such incidents in the future.

The Commission has also asked for a complete report on the number and particulars of the persons killed and injured in the violence.

It is to be mentioned that in his complaint, the President of MASS Bubu Moni Goswami had alleged that the local administration did not pay any respect to the 14 innocent civilians killed on the night of October 4, 2009 by suspected NDFB militants.

Goswami, in his complaint, had stated that as per media reports, motor tyres were used to cremate the dead bodies of those killed, which was a total disregard to human rights and dignity. The complainant had also expressed his dissatisfaction over the government's failure to protect the lives of innocent people. THE SENTINEL
