International Trade Fair to lay stress on self-help groups

GUWAHATI, Oct 9: In a bid to boost the handloom and handicraft sector of the state and provide a platform to the self-help groups to display their locally made products, the North East Trade Promotion and Development Council (NETPDC) will organize the 3rd Asom International Trade Fair from October 14 at the Veterinary playground in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati yesterday, NETPDC president Paramesh Dutta said, ‘‘The key objective of the fair is to highlight local and indigenous products and promote it at the international level.’’

Altogether seven countries including Thailand, Egypt, Kenya, Bangladesh and Iran will showcase their products during the fair. The fair will also provide an unique opportunity to the SHGs of the region by ensuring free participation to 50 such groups to display their exquisite handicraft items.

General Secretary of NETPDC Debarshi Baruah said, ‘‘We are laying stress on promoting products made by SHGs, besides promoting brass products from Sarthebari.’’

The fair will feature more than 400 stalls including several Central government departments such as Spices Board, Coir Board, Jute Marketing etc.

Union Minister of State for Commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia and DoNER Minister BK Handique will also participate in the fair on October 20 and October 23-24 respectively. As a move to explore trade potential between Northeast and South East Asian countries, the Ministry of DoNER is in talks with these countries for participation of their top officials in the fair.

The volume of business stood a Rs 16.5 crore last year and the organizers are expecting good business this year too. Apart from this, the NETPDC is in talks with the DoNER Ministry to organize ‘Destination Northeast’, a platform to promote local products at the international level. THE SENTINEL
