Bar bogus Asom voters from voting: Arunachal CEC told

GUWAHATI, Oct 11: Allegations by Arunachal Pradesh that some people of Asom living along the Asom-Arunachal Pradesh border got their names enrolled in the electoral rolls of Papumpare district in Arunachal Pradesh is not new. Earlier also Arunachal Pradesh raised such allegations against some people of Asom. Similar allegations had also come from Nagaland and Meghalaya that some people of Asom managed to get their names enrolled in the voter lists of the neighbouring States and cast their votes there. This is indeed a serious matter.

A few years back, an elected panchayat member of West Guwahati LAC had his name enrolled in the neighbouring district of Meghalaya. The Asom Government should have discussed the matter with its Meghalaya counterpart as to how the enumerators of the neighbouring States enrolled voters of Asom in Meghalaya’s electoral rolls. Since border areas are backward, the Asom Government should have conducted awareness campaign on the risk involved in dual enrolment in voter list. The deputy commissioners concerned of Asom should also play an important role in bringing awareness among the people instead of looking the other way when such incidents take place under their very nose. Such incidents, if not checked now, may land Asom in troubled waters.

Kimin Anchalik Chairman Chaku Tapio, Kimin ZPM Bamang Yayu, Belo Lora ASM Taba Yaka, Lichi Cher ASM Nabam Nyedo and Upper Jhumi ASM Nich Kojum informed Arunachal Pradesh Chief Election Commissioner Hagar of the enrolment of people of Asom in the voter list of Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh. They said the enrolment of Asom people as voters in Arunachal Pradesh was done by some politicians for their vested interest. They demanded of the Chief Election Commissioner to bar the Asom citizens from voting in Arunachal Pradesh elections slated for October 13. THE SENTINEL
