Women power in rich list of Arunachal candidates

ITANAGAR, Oct 11: Outrageously outnumbered by the males this election, not that the situation was any different in earlier contests, women in fray this time around cannot be shrugged off that easily. Especially not when it comes to their assets worth.

Amongst the nine women candidates in the election fray this time a little less than half of them are crorepatis. At least, not a single one of them are in the pauper list.

Nang Sati Mein, who is contesting as an Independent candidate from Namsai Assembly constituency, leads the pack of women crorepatis in the fray. In fact she rubs shoulders with her male counterparts in the race. In the overall crorepati list of 63 (amongst the 157 candidates), she is amongst the top ten at the 8th position with a whopping Rs 15 crore worth of assets, both movable and immovable!

Incidentally, she is just two steps behind her husband Chowna Mein, who is at the 6th position with more than Rs 18 crore of declared assets. Mein, a sitting MLA is recontesting from Lekang Assembly seat as an INC nominee.

According to the affidavits filed by her, Nang Sati Mein has bank deposits worth Rs 2 crore-plus that includes a fixed deposit of Rs 1,81,79,661. While her husband does not have a car, she has 9 high-end cars to her name.

In the list of her immovable assets, Sati has one apartment each at New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati, which amounts to about Rs 1,02,50,000! She also owns a building near MLA Cottage, Itanagar worth Rs 52 lakh. However, her costliest asset is the agricultural land at her native place, which if calculated at present value, is more than Rs 1 crore.

Besides being the wealthiest amongst the women candidates, Nang Sati Mein, aged about 50, is also one of the most educated. She did her graduation from Lady Keane College, Shillong in 1980.
Next in the lady crorepati list is Yari Dulom, wife of former minister Tadak Dulom and president of the state Mahila Congress Committee. Without saying it goes that she is contesting on an INC ticket from Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district.

Dulom, 59, also figures in the top 20 rich list at number 15. She has declared assets worth Rs 6 crore. Her movable assets itself is worth more than Rs 5 crore. Education-wise, though, Dulom is at the bottom low with nil education.

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate from Basar, Daktar Basar, is the third wealthiest in the fairer group. She is worth more than Rs 3 crore in assets as declared officially and stands 24th in the general rich list of contesting candidates.

Wife of Dr Tajum Basar, the Director of state Health Services, Dakter, aged about 53, is one amongst the privileged few wives of bureaucrats contesting this election. She might not have immovable assets worth mentioning but her husband owns ancestral land in Basar that stands at a whopping Rs 1.5 crore at present value. They also own a building at Itanagar worth Rs 24 lakh and a farm house at Basar worth Rs 6 lakh.

As for her individual wealth, Dakter owns gold worth Rs 15 lakh and local beads worth 10 lakh besides having a bank balance of Rs 20 lakh plus.

Dakter, like Nang Sati, is also a graduate. She did her graduation from the then Government Degree College Itanagar in 1988.

Next wealthiest is Pomaya Mithi, wife of former Chief Minister and present Rajya Sabha MP Mukut Mithi, who is contesting on an INC ticket in a straight fight against sitting MLA Laeta Umbrey of AITC.

Pomaya, aged about 51, is worth Rs 2 crore plus. Her main asset in terms of financial health is her (and her son’s) shares in Dibang Valley Tea Company, which is worth at least Rs 70 lakh. Besides she owns ancestral land in Roing area, the value of which is still unaccounted.

Pomaya also owns an apartment in NFC, New Delhi worth Rs 17 lakh besides one at Itanagar of Rs 27 lakh.

Interestingly, her educational qualification in the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission says ‘attended class XII, Govt H S School, Roing (1975)’.

Missing the crorepati tag by a simple margin is AITC’s Duter Padu with assets worth more than Rs 89 lakh. She is into a straight fight with sitting MLA Gadam Ete of INC from Aalo West Assembly constituency.

Arguably one of the youngest at 44, Duter is also a top bureaucrat Geyum Padu’s wife hailing from Darka village near Aalo in West Siang district. She passed her higher secondary from Aalo as a private candidate in 1986.

Not far behind Duter is Yai Mara of AITC contesting from Likabali against 3 political veterans, including sitting MLA Jomde Kena (INC) and former minister Kardu Taipodia of PPA. Mara’s third opponent is NCP’s Gumke Riba.

A former ZPM and Congress ticket aspirant, Mara has total assets of more than Rs 69 lakh that includes one building each at Itanagar and Gensi of Rs 25 lakh and Rs 15 lakh respectively. She does not own a vehicle but has one Maruti SX4 to her husband’s credit. Incidentally, Mara is also one of the bureaucrat wives in the election fray.

Another lakhpati is NCP’s Kenyir Ringu giving a tough time to sitting MLA and minister Tako Dabi (INC) from Nari-Koyu Assembly segment. Kenyir, wife of former Chief Secretary Takap Ringu and daughter of senior citizen Boken Ete, is worth total assets of more than Rs 43 lakh.
Acquiring her secondary level education from Banasthali Vidyapeeth, Rajasthan, Kenyir has been into activism and resigned recently as a member of the State Commission for Women to contest this election.

She does not own a car but has a Tata-Mobile in her husband’s name and has a building at C Sector Itanagar worth Rs 20 lakh.

With only Rs 10,000 in hand, no deposits in banks and a Maruti 800 to travel around, NCP’s Jitboh Aboh sure has a tough time against INC’s Yumsem Matey and sitting MLA Thajam Aboh.
Jitboh with the help of some jewellery and ancestral properties is worth a little above Rs 4 lakh.
However, she has a loan against her name from SBI Khonsa which is more than Rs 7 lakh!
She may be last in the women’s rich list but Karya Bagang is giving nightmares to veteran politician and once deputy chief minister Kameng Dolo in Chayangtajo assembly constituency in East Kameng district.

Wife of Tara Bagang, who last contested against Dolo unsuccessfully, Karya is the youngest of the women lot at only 32. She has Rs 1 lakh in hand and Rs 4,663 in a bank account. Her only property worth mentioning is a building at Seppa worth Rs 2 lakh. That makes her worth at little above Rs 3 lakh.

Wonder her chances against Kameng Dolo, whose declared assets stand at Rs 18 crore and more! THE SENTINEL
