ITANAGAR, Oct 5: 37-PASIGHAT West: Omak Apang (INC) versus Tangor Tapak (BJP) could be one of the biggest battles in the Assembly Elections, 2009. People of West Pasighat, on either side of the NH 52, are bracing up for the electoral tussle between Tangor Tapak, state president of BJP, and Omak Apang, former Union State Minister of INC, are in a straight contest. The stakes are high since Tangor Tapak and the incumbent MLA of the constituency, Omak Apang of INC, are fighting it out for the second time consecutively.
Besides being a former Lok Sabha MP and union Minister for Tourism in the NDA government of late 90s, Omak is the eldest son of former Chief Minister Geong Apang. Therefore, he is a force to reckon with in local politics. With his long hands-on experience of working with NGO of international repute, he has contributed towards the uplift of the constituency. One of the ‘big-ticket’ contributions as sitting legislator has been the establishment industrial estate in Niglok.
However, Tapak, a trained doctor was in the State health service under the government for 8 years before he took plunge into politics. In 1999, he won the elections from the area defeating Yadap Apang, wife of Geong Apang and mother of Omak Apang. As a former Health Minister and State president of BJP, T Tapak is an experienced politician with strong organizing ability as his core strength. He is seen as capable of avenging his last defeat at the hands of same INC candidate, Omak Apang.
Political analysts think that 12,366 voters may not actually decide the fate of two heavyweights; but it could be the so-called ‘invisible-hands’ that would call the shots. Till such time, for sure, both are going to have sleepless nights. THE SENTINEL
