GUWAHATI, Oct 2: Extending support to the global initiatives for a cleaner and greener tomorrow, the North East Girl Students’ Association (NEGSA) in coordination with the Gandhi Smriti Darshan Samiti, New Delhi, Kasturba Gandhi Trust, Indira Gandhi National University (IGNOU) and Handique Girls’ College Students’ Union jointly launched ‘Clean City, Green City’, a public awareness drive at the premises of the Handique Girls’ College today.
As part of the awareness initiative, a training programme was conducted where volunteers were trained on ways to keep the city green and clean and generate awareness among the city-dwellers for a cleaner and greener Guwahati. A community cleaning drive was also undertaken by the volunteers at the college campus. The six-month long programme that kickstarted today will be continued till April 2, 2010.
Addressing the occasion, Deputy Commissioner (metro) of Kamrup, Prateek Hajela lauded the initiatives and assured complete government support to the cause.
Chief Coordinator of the training programme Navajit Dutta informed that the GNB Road and MC Road have been chosen as model places for the cleanliness drive. He also said that similar training programmes to generate awareness would be conducted in more than 300 colleges in the city.
Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the Shillong unit of IGNOU, H Guha, Director of Employment and Craftsman training Dr Moloy Bora, Faculty of IIBM Dr BN Mukhopadhyaya were also present at the occasion.
Meanwhile, the North East Girl Students’ Association (NEGSA) conducted a follow-up programme for multi-skill and leadership development at the Kasturba Ashram in South Sarania yesterday. The programme was chaired by Gandhian Natowar Thakkar.
The first and second phase of the programme were conducted with a 15-day and 21-day workshop in April and July this year respectively.
In yesterday’s follow-up programme, NEGSA president Munmi Dutta said the girls who participated in the workshops would be provided with enough opportunities for self-employment in their field of interest. Also present on the occasion, Mission Director of Asom Sarva Siksha Abhijan Abhinash Joshi said, ‘‘Young girls who aspire for overall personality development and leadership skills have greatly benefited from the workshop’’. He urged the NEGSA to organize such workshops in regular intervals for the greater interest of young and aspiring girls. Along with the other dignitaries, Regional Director of IGNOU Bardhin Bhattacharjee was also present on the occasion. THE SENTINEL
