JORHAT, Oct 12: From the very moment of inaugurating the Jorhat Medical College and closing up the Jananayak Debeswar Sarma (JDS) Civil Hospital by Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, today the JDS Civil Hospital of the district will perhaps become a past glory in the history of Jorhat.
Established in 1959, the JDS Civil Hospital was the only hospital of the town during the last few decades and all classes of people of the district rushed to it for medical treatment and benefited from it. Earlier, the hospital was set up at the premises of Bisturam Boruah Hospital and shifted it to the present location. Later, the hospital was named as JDS Civil Hospital in memory of the legendary personality and a famous freedom fighter of Indian freedom movement of Jorhat– Debeswar Sarma in his birth centenary celebration programme. Sarma was also a member of Asom Assembly and the founder of Dainik Janambhumi group in Jorhat.
Although the hospital was the biggest Government Health Care Centre of the town with a few modern health care facilities but the name is changed as Jorhat Medical College Hospital from today. Asom Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in this regard in the inauguration programme of Jorhat Medical College here today. In his announcement, Sarma categorically said that, although the name of the hospital is being changed but the Government has taken a decision with the mere consent of late Sarma’s family that, the former hospital building is named as Jananayak Debeswar Sarma Bhavan in memory of the Asom’s glorious son.
