JORHAT, Oct 13: When Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was in his home constituency Jorhat, activists of the Jorhat district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) blocked the busy NH 37 near Jorhat truck stand at the heart of the town for around two hours in protest against the skyrocketing price rise of essential commodities and the failure of the State Government in controlling the price rise.
The students’ body alleged that the State Government has completely failed to control the skyrocketing prise rise of essential commodities. Terming the unprecedented prise hike as a blow to the people of the State, they demanded of the government to control the situation with an immediate effect.
Talking to The Sentinel, Jorhat district AASU general secretary Dhrubajyoti Hazarika alleged that at a time when the poor people of the State lack basic amenities, they have been bearing the extra burden of price rise to which the government has turned a deaf ear. He also alleged the government has a secret understanding with unscrupulous traders. The students’ body also criticized the Jorhat district administration for its failure to make public the current price list of the district.
Meanwhile, according to the information received from Jorhat DIPRO Dyusanta Madhab Sarma, the district administration had a talk with the Chambers of Commerce, Food and Civil Supply Department and the AASU unit in this regard recently. As per the decision taken at the meeting, the administration has ordered businessmen of the district to display the price list of essential commodities, and the Chambers of Commerce has appealed to businessmen to decrease the prices of essential commodities for the greater interest of the people.
