SHILLONG, Oct 8: The Department of Atomic Energy today said UCIL is not mandated to develop entire West Khasi Hills district under the pre-development projects.
Head of the public awareness division of the Department of Atomic Energy SK Malhotra told reporters on the sidelines of the birth centenary celebrations of nuclear scientist Homi Jahangir Bhabha held at Nongmynsong today that UCIL was not an agency which could develop entire West Khasi Hills.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister DD Lapang recently said that he would convince UCIL to extend the development works to the entire district. However, Malhotra ruled out any such possibility saying, “UCIL is not a road development agency and the entire West Khasi Hills district, where the uranium mining sites are located, cannot be developed.”
Malhotra said that the Rs 209 crore pre-development projects by UCIL will be limited to the uranium mining sites and the surrounding areas only. Stating that they are ready to start with the mining of the ore, Malhotra said they have received permission for pre-developmental projects.
Stating that there is no environmental impact on the people of the area, Malhotra said UCIL stands guarantee and called for a debate provided someone comes forward to seek explanations.
Earlier speaking at the function, Malhotra said Indian nuclear reactors are facing 30 to 40 per cent shortage of indigenous uranium oxide. He said since there is 10,000 tonnes of uranium oxide in Mawthabah, the shortage of uranium which the country’s nuclear reactors are facing can be solved if allowed to mine. THE SENTINEL
