Northeast Youth Festival begins in Nagaland

KOHIMA, Oct 8: The first ever North East Youth Festival with the theme ‘Youth and Theme’ was inaugurated today at the Indira Gandhi Statium in Kohima by Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Pratik Prakashbapu Patil. The festival is being organized jointly by the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of India and the Nagaland Government.

The festival is being held to provide opportunities to the youths of the Northeast along with the country. Nagaland chief minister Nephiu Rio graced the occasion as the guest of honour. A march past was also held on the occasion where people from many State participated in their traditional finery. About 1,500 young artistes from all over the country will participate in the festival that will continue till October 10.

Speaking on the occasion, Rio appealed to the youths of the country to work hard for achieving the best and to get world-wide recognition. He also said that the global recession has put forward several questions, many of which are yet to find a complete answer. But, there is one definite answer that is bound to be accepted in every walk of life and that is creativity. He, therefore, urged the youths to follow the three Ds –– dedication, discipline and determination for success.
Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya B M Lanong also addressed the youths in the function. The inauguration of the festival was followed by cultural performances which included traditional Nagas indigenous sports like Naga wrestling, taekwondo display by students and other tribal dances. The three-day festival will witness a number of competitive events like rock band contest, one act play, folk dance, folk music, classical dance competitions etc. for which elaborate arrangements have been made. A Convention has also been organized for the NSS students in which eminent personalities will address and share their experiences with the students. The closing ceremony will be held on October 10, 2009. The ceremony will be graced by Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development Agatha Sangma. THE SENTINEL
