ARTEE decries discrimination towards Northeast

SHILLONG, Oct 8: The North Eastern Zone of the Association of Radio and Television Engineering Employees (ARTEE) will debate on the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s discriminatory attitude towards the region. In protest against the response of the ministry to the association persistent’s request to address problems of manipulation, discrimination towards the region at the behest of somebody at a certain level, ARTEE today decided to list the issue as the main agenda at the two-day convention scheduled to be held in Shillong from Friday.

Addressing newsmen in Shillong today, vice chairman of North Eastern Region ARTEE D Bordoloi said the higher up’s bias attitude is the sole reason for the poor AIR and Doordarshan services in the region. Right from the recruiting process to diversion of funds meant for the north-eastern region, Bordoloi cited a number of instances that needed attention.

Pointing out at the regional chief engineer’s office that still functions from a rented house in Guwahati, Bordoloi said even the north-eastern projects have not been handed to the chief engineer in-charge of the region on the pretext that there is dearth of infrastructure. “The project works of north-eastern zone are being intentionally delayed and funds for this region are grossly misused by the offices of Delhi and Kolkata”, alleged Bordoloi, adding, “The manipulation has reached to such an extent that the huge funds sanctioned as Northeast Special Package have been diverted to other zone for 1,000 kw transmitter in West Bengal and the 10 kw transmitter/studio in Lakshadweep”.

Upset over the alleged discrimination, Bordoloi said that the chief engineer’s office of All India Radio and Doordarshan headquarters in Guwahati may be wound up any time in order to empower the erstwhile zonal office to control the north-eastern region.

Bordoloi also said the poor reach of the AIR and Doordarshan network into the rural areas is because of the redundant recruitment policy of the ministry. “In the open recruitment policy, selected candidates from outside the zone usually go for a home-town posting in a year time and between the transmitting stations are left unattended”, said Bordoloi.
