No government notification on KSU’s Friday picketing

SHILLONG, Oct 8: Barring the promulgation of Section 144 CrPC by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, no official directive has been issued by the State Government to its employees to attend office on Friday. The KSU has called one-day office picketing on Friday to put pressure on the government to retreat its decision of leasing out 422 acres of land to Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for the pre-project development of uranium mining in the State.

Despite absence of any fresh communication to the State Government employees, a senior bureaucrat told The Sentinel on condition of anonymity that a standing order to all the government employees to report for duty as usual is still applicable. “We expect the government employees to realize the gravity of the notification and all of them are expected to be responsive”, said the senior government functionary.

As per the notification issued earlier, failure to comply with the notification will invite stringent action by the government which includes forfeiture of a day’s pay.

Meanwhile, the State Government authorities rekindled the Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1980 to thwart agitation threat by the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) Employees’ Association. The SMB employees are demanding the reinstatement of transferred chief executive officer (CEO) HM Shangpliang. If the government issues an order under sub-Section (1) of the Act, any mode of agitation by the SMB employees will invite provisions of Section 3 part (a) and (b) of the Act.

What may be more adverse for an employee found violating the Act is that the service book and annual confidential report of the employee would bear a blot in the form of a black remark which would definitely have an adverse implication on the future of the employees’ service track, sources said.
