Shortage of skilled personnel

DIBRUGARH, Oct 9: The shortage of skilled and experienced personnel is one of the challenges being faced by the upstream petroleum sector. There is an urgent need for the creation of human capital for tomorrow both in terms of number as well as quality.

This was said by the Director (HR) of ONGC Limited, Dr AK Balyan, who delivered the 13th Foundation Lecture of the Indian Geological Congress at Dibrugarh University today. The lecture was on ‘Upstream Petroleum Sector Challenges-HR Perspective’.

The speaker went on to talk about energy efficiency in the present age when demand outstrips production of oil and said that the need of the hour was for a strategy that assures availability at affordable price. Focusing on the crisis being faced by the oil industry in India, he said that academies should address the employability factor wherein the courses offered should be tailor made to meet the demands of the industry.

In the course of the lecture, Dr Balyan went on to trace the growth of the oil industry in the world and in India. He also touched upon the various ways to improve production and emphasized on the need to integrate technology with talent to meet the present day challenges.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Prof KK Deka, delivered the welcome address. He gave an account of the development and achievement of the university as well as the Departments of Applied Geology and Petroleum Technology. Prof OP Varma of the Indian Geological Congress gave an overview of the organization’s initiatives, besides introducing the chief guest, Dr AK Balyan. THE SENTINEL
