Stripping of minister’s portfolio needs AICC approval: Lapang

SHILLONG, Oct 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang has said the demand of the Congress legislators to strip off Urban Affairs portfolio from lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MLA Paul Lyngdoh will need approval of the Congress High Command.
Several Shillong-based Congress legislators had demanded stripping off the Urban Affairs portfolio from Lyngdoh for various alleged irregularities. The irregularities include leasing out of parking lots, collection of parking fees, leasing out of Shillong Municipal Board, inordinate shifting of garbage-dumping ground amongst others.

“'The demand of the Congress MLAs to strip the Urban Affairs portfolio from Paul will be briefed to the AICC leaders,” Lapang told reporters here yesterday. The Chief Minister said he cannot take an unilateral decision on this issue since KHNAM’s extending support to the Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government was approved by the Congress High Command.

Lapang is scheduled to leave for New Delhi on October 6. “We are very unhappy with the style of functioning of Paul and we want the Chief Minister to remove the Urban Affairs portfolio from him,” Congress legislator Founder Strong Cajee said.

The Congress legislators wanted the Urban Affairs portfolio be allotted to Congress legislator M Ampareen Lyngdoh, a Cabinet Minister in the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government. However, Lapang had termed the demand of the Congress legislators for stripping the Urban Affairs portfolio from Lyngdoh as ‘politically motivated’. UNI
