DIBRUGARH, Nov 3: The students, faculties, staff and employees of Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) took a pledge to make the AMC campus an air and noise pollution, alcohol, tobacco, betel nut, ragging and crime free zone on the occasion of the institution’s 63rd foundation day today. The day’s celebration started with the hoisting of the college flag by the Principal Dr Tafique Rehman Borbora.
A meeting was held at the John Berry White Auditorium of the college with Dr Borbora in the chair. In his inaugural speech, the Power and Industry Minister Pradyut Bordoloi recalled the sacrifice and contribution of the then Prime Minister of Assam Gopinath Bordoloi, noted industrialist Murlidhar Jalan and the teachers, faculty members, staff and employees and others in shaping the premier medical institution. Expressing his satisfaction over the new wave of vibrancy in regard to its academic and infrastructure development, he called upon all to sustain the growth and work for the welfare of the people of this region. Bordoloi disclosed that the citizens could access the health care system through Central Government’s recently introduced Unique Identity Card. Expressing his serious concern over the shortage of staff in various departments, the minister assured that he would take all initiatives to fill up the vacancies.
The Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Gautam Baruah, was also present on the occasion as honoured guest. In his speech, he called upon the college authority to take full advantage of the latest information technology. Elaborating on the various aspects of the National Knowledge Network System, which will connect most premier institutions of the country, Baruah stated that the authority should move faster for full computerization of the college so that it could move forward faster in its mission to provide good health care, best research work and fast and accurate management of the medical records. Keeping in view of the globalization perspective, he favoured autonomy for AMC so that the premier institute could manage its all affairs more efficiently.
Addressing the meeting as honoured guest, the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka, expressed great concern over the non-functioning of the existing Medical Research Council (MRC). He lamented that though the other two research councils of the university have been functioning with extensive research work being done and a number of scholars earning their doctorates on various topics, the MRC had failed miserably in this aspect. Dr Deka said that, only one doctor of AMC had obtained the Ph.D degree from the university, in a topic from humanities. He made the suggestion for the revival of MRC and urged upon the AMC faculty members to devote time in research work on various topics in health care.
Recalling the AMC’s contribution and service towards the health care system and its achievements in various National and International forums, the Vice-Chancellor said that the premier medical institution should be turned to a medical university in the days to come.
Earlier, the Principal Dr Taufique Rehman Borbora, gave a detailed report of the achievements of the teachers and students as well as an account of the infrastructure development in the college. He also touched upon the social and cultural activities of the faculty members and students besides focusing on the perennial problems of the institution. A number of distinguished retired Professors of the college were felicitated on the occasion for their immense contribution towards the growth and development of the AMC.
Several fourth grade employees were awarded on the occasion in order to encourage better performance in their respective fields. The Principal stated that, similar awards would be given away on every foundation day celebration. THE SENTINEL
