Emergency ferry service launched

JORHAT, Nov 2: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has launched an emergency ferry service for Majuli yesterday. The ferry is provided particularly for the patients of Majuli as to commute the river Brahmaputra at the earliest. According to the information, the new ferry service will take a trip within twenty minutes in the river from one bank to other. The general commuter boats take around two hours to commute the river, which was a serious cause of concern, and there are many reports of such deaths due to the slow journey in the river by other general ferries.

Inaugurating the new emergency ferry service, Dr Bhupati Kumar Das, Managing Director of NRL said that, Majuli is the cultural hub of Assam and it is the glory of the State. He also assured the people to give all possible help for the greater interest of the protection of the riverine island. "We should protect our rich glories by taking any means", he added.

The Managing Director of NRL further informed that, a new ferry with forty seats will also be provided for the people of Majuli soon.

Jorhat Deputy Commissioner LS Changsan also attended the programme. In her speech she informed that, the Health Department of Assam Government will control the emergency ferry service under ‘Mritunjoy 108’ service. THE SENTINEL
