Extension of quota system by 10 years opposed

GUWAHATI, Nov 15: The Sadharan Jati Bikash Parishad (SJBP) has expressed dissatisfaction over the extension of reservation system by another 10 years till 2020.

In a press statement, SJBP secretary general Mitradev Sarma said the general class has been deprived for so long as a result of the reservation system.

In the last 62 years of independence, the ST, SC and other backward classes have developed in all spheres and its time the quota system was lifted, Sarma said.

Blaming the Central Government for ‘‘conspiring’’ against the general class, he said a reservation system based on caste, creed and community does not reflect a socialist country.

The reservation system was incorporated by makers of the Indian constitution for a period of 10 years for the advancement of socially and educationally backward classes of citizens. But the successive Governments subsequently extended this provision for every 10 years through constitutional amendments. Initially the reservation for backward classes stood at 17 per cent which was later increased to 49.5 per cent.

Criticizing the Centre for extending the reservation system for sixth consecutive time, the Sadharan Jati Bikash Parishad has demanded of the Government to lift the quota system at the earliest in favour of a socialist country in the true sense of the term. THE SENTINEL
